|Duflo wins Clark Medal
Esther Duflo PhD ‘99, whose influential research has prompted new ways of fighting poverty around the globe, was named winner today of the John Bates Clark medal. Duflo is the second woman to be given the award, which ranks below only the Nobel Prize in prestige within the economics profession and is considered a reliable indicator of future Nobel consideration (about 40 percent of past recipients have won a Nobel).
|Caballero elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences
Department Head Ricardo Caballero was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences this Spring. Two of the department's Ph.D.s, Emmanuel Saez of Berkeley and Rob Shimer of Chicago, were also elected. The Academy recognizes America's most distinguished scholars and contributors in many fields and areas of public service.
|Economist Paul Samuelson dies at age 94
In a career that spanned seven decades, Samuelson transformed his field, influenced millions of students and turned MIT into an economics powerhouse. He was the first American to win the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1970. A memorial celebrating his life and career was held in MIT's Kresge Auditorium on April 10, 2010. Please click here for details.
|Chernozhukov elected to the Econometric Society
Professor Victor Chernozhukov was elected a fellow of the Econometric Society in the Fall 2009 ballot. Chernozhukov also presented the Inaugural Cowles Foundation Lecture at the North American Summer Meeting in Boston, June 2009.
|Costinot named a Sloan Fellow
Assistant Professor Arnaud Costinot was awarded a Sloan Foundation Fellowship this Spring. Sloan Fellowships recognize promising young economists across the country.
|Caballero Delivers Distinguished Lectures
Department head Ricardo Caballero delivered the ninth Paolo Baffi Lecture, at the Bank of Italy in December 2009. He was also the keynote speaker at the 10th Jacques Polak Annual Research Conference in October 2009.

Professor Esther Duflo was recognized by the Journal of Foreign Policy as one of the top 100 global thinkers who shaped our world in 2009, for her work adding quantitative rigor to assessments of foreign aid.
